Week of September 17th

Hello 2nd Grade Families!

I hope everyone had a great start to their week.  Here are a few announcements
and reminders:
READING LOG HOMEWORK CAME HOME TODAY.
Please keep this at home and have your child return it on Friday.
Tuesday, 9/18: We will have a guest educator from VINS come to teach us about the importance of pollinators. This links in with our Monarch Butterfly Project Based Learning unit, which we launched today. Please see our PBL Launch Slideshow HERE
Thursday, 9/20: I will be carrying out reading assessments, so the class will have a substitute teacher for the day.
Friday, 9/21: PICTURE DAY! Please have your child bring in their picture form or complete the online order before the end of the week.
CURRICULUM UPDATES
Our class starts each morning the same way. We have a page of Morning Work (called Early Birds), followed by a Morning Meeting where we greet each other and have a Circle discussion that allows us to get to know one another better. We read the Morning Message and review our schedule for the day. (Kids love to know what to expect every day!) After this we do Number Corner, which is a part of our math program that focuses on the calendar and important 2nd grade math standards, all wrapped up into a meaningful half hour! We end Number Corner with something called a Dot Talk. The students are shown a "quick look" at a series of dots and then share out the totals and how they saw it. It's an awesome way to get students to think about numbers visually, as well as to understand there are many ways to group numbers to create a whole. SEE PHOTO BELOW! 😃

We have our regular math lessons in the afternoon. Right now we are learning about pictographs and glyphs. Today the students created beetle glyphs showing: birthdays, favorite seasons, favorite sports, and how many people are in their family. We will use this data to graph information about our class; and we will continue to use visuals like this to show or explain our work throughout the year.
We have started keeping Weekend Journals, which are excellent jumping-off points for personal narrative writing. Every Monday the students write about something they did over the weekend. We will shift into Small Moment Writing in the coming weeks. We are also having fun writing creative imaginary stories about animals. The students love to read their work to one another.
Both 2nd grade classes have completed the Words Their Way Spelling Inventory. We will this information to group students by spelling stage in order to study words that
are appropriate for each child.  We are still in the grouping process, and that is
why there are no spelling words this week.
Finally, the 2nd graders are very enthusiastic about our read aloud book, The Wild Robot Escapes, the sequel to the original Wild Robot book their first grade teachers read to them.
As always, please email me with any questions or concerns! jenkyna@hartfordschools.net
